Wellbeing for Long Covid and non Covid long term viral damage

Welcome to our online Masterclasses focusing on Wellbeing for Long Covid and non Covid viral damage. Join us for the first of 24 educational wellbeing Masterclasses that will be delivered over the next three years. We deliver 12 Masterclasses in the first year (one monthly), eight in the second year and four in the third year. Over those three years, through a combination of scientific research, insightful discussions and real lived experience, we will provide you with one to three wellbeing tools and strategies in every Masterclass that you can practice to help you manage your long term or chronic viral damage more effectively and help you to live a more positive and resilient life. Learning resources will be sent to you before every Masterclass to help you utilise the tools and strategies we will introduce. All our Masterclasses are delivered by a professional educator and we will be inviting guest speakers also.

Muddy Care CIC is a not for profit professional educational organisation that specialises in wellbeing for the not so well through educational Masterclasses, resources, workshops and outdoor learning experiences and activities. All of our services are led by professional educators or life coaches who not only have extensive research experience in chronic health conditions but also have direct living experience of chronic and or long-term conditions.

Muddy Care has a library of over 6000 hours of research into wellbeing in relation to chronic and long-term conditions. We have completed four very successful pilot studies and have interviewed over 120 people with serious chronic and long-term conditions. We believe our two year rehabilitation pilot programme is still the longest wellbeing rehabilitation programme that has taken place in the UK for people 18 years and over with a chronic or long-term condition over a period of two years. The impact outcomes superseded all expectations.

This Masterclass will be led by our CEO who in 2011, at 37 years of age, went into the early stages of heart failure from an unknown virus that not only devastated her heart but also her life. She developed myopericarditis, a left bundle branch block, a permanent pericardial effusion, brain fog and fatigue so extreme she couldn't even raise her arms to wash the shampoo out of her hair. What makes this more interesting is she was a retired GB athlete. She was healthy and fit but viruses do not discriminate as you know. She was offered no form of wellbeing support by the hospital, was told to rest (including three months of staying completely in her house), hope for the best but prepare for her own mortality. It was beyond brutal what she had to endure and cope with but also alarmingly concerning as she was given no form of support what so ever. She didn't qualify for cardiac rehabilitation under her County hospital as viral damage was not regarded as a qualifying prerequisite. Four months into her illness journey she was told she had entered the early stages of heart failure. Things had now progressed to mortality stage. In a desperate attempt to live, she designed her own rehabilitation programme and completed it in secret as she had been warned explicitly to do no form of exercise or movement by her cardiologist. 18 months after she collapsed from a virus attacking her heart, her cardiologist told her that she had defied the odds and she had finally got out of the parameters of early-stage heart failure. Her cardiologist honestly thought at this stage in their medical journey he would be walking her through the transplant programme journey. He told Claire she was extremely lucky and that this outcome rarely occurs with someone with her heart damage and was probably a result of her being an elite sportswoman. She never disclosed to her then cardiologist what she had been doing. It was from here that Muddy Care was born. A wellbeing service to provide tools and strategies to help people with chronic and long-term medical conditions manage their conditions more effectively leading to happier lives.

Claire will have a damaged heart for life. She cannot participate in explosive exercise nor climb hills or paddle roaring rivers like she used to but her heart condition remains stable and out of the parameters of heart failure. She may need a pace maker one day due her left bundle branch block but through adaptation, perseverance and persistence as well as knowledge, skills and understanding she has managed to create stabilisation of her heart conditions. However, what she would also like to disclose here, as is often the case with viral damage, three years after her initial viral damage occurred, she developed a very rare, serious and extremely aggressive auto immune disease that has threatened her life again on several occasions. At Muddy Care we truly know the realities of chronic and long-term conditions. That reality builds connection and is why out tools and strategies work. Because they are designed through scientific research and then applied through the eyes of real lived experience.

Things have improved signifcantly since COVID in relation to support but there is still a signifcant need to help those with long term and chronic viral damage on a long term basis with their wellbeing.
