Event description

Description

Despite legislation providing protection from discrimination due to mental health disability and employers having a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work, a recent Labour Force Survey identified that 12.5 million working days were lost in 2016/ 2017 due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety with the legal sector having a higher than average prevalence. Unless addressed mental health issues and unsupportive working environments can have significant impact and escalate to career-ending lengths.

In order to have a legal profession that is fit for the demands of delivering legal services in the 21st century we need to make sure that those providing those services are productive, resilient and able to cope with a changing and competitive environment.

Increasingly organisations are developing wellbeing policies. There are many benefits to this - better physical and mental health, greater motivation, creativity and more productive work. From an employer’s perspective actively improving wellbeing may help to attract a talented and diverse range of people, help with staff retention, reduce sick days, increase productivity and give an edge over competitors. Consequently it makes good business sense to take wellbeing seriously.
