Our latest "WELLCOME" TO FORENSICS - is a two day workshop to be held on Tuesday 18th June and Thursday 20th June 2019 from 10am to 2.30pm each day. It is free for members of the public and is funded through the Wellcome Trust and WEA.

This is an event for adults and there are no requirements as to qualifications or ability, even if you have never studied before you are more than welcome to join us. The only criteria is you should be aged 18 or above. There is definitely no need for any forensic knowledge. Funding is already available and you do not need to make any applications or complete any paperwork to obtain it. Just contact us to register your interest and enrol on the course.

The programme will take place at Harecourt URC, 120 St Pauls Road, Mildmay Ward, London, N1 2LR. If you do wish to enrol you must be prepared to make your own way to the venue and must sign up to both sessions. Enrolling is simple just express your interest here on Eventbrite and we will be in touch to confirm your place.

The sessions will be run by Think Forensic staff so you will meet and talk to criminologists, anthropologists, forensic scientists, CSI's, and crime investigation officers, all of whom have worked in the field.

The sessions will look at many different topics and we have put a basic outline of the programme below, however we may change this depending on our staff availability.

Session 1 - Tuesday 18th July 2019

Introduction to the course, forensic techniques and anthropology

Opening of programme, information on WEA and Wellcome Trust followed by introduction to forensics -

  • Different branches of forensics,
  • Roles,
  • Types of evidence,
  • Case study highlighting team working, budgets and evidence integrity.

Hands on forensic techniques including;

  • Fingerprints - developing, lifting, identification and the biology behind prints.
  • Footwear marks – casting, matching and electronic lifting
  • Hair and Fibres – microscopic examination, morphology of hair and origins of fires, matching and comparison
  • Blood Spatter – velocity, direction of travel, weapons, reading patterns.

Anthropology;

  • Human skeleton - male v female, age, ethnic differences, disease, trauma
  • Entomology - Insect infestation, indentifications, stages, establishing location and time of death
  • Archeaology - Techniques and principles, exhumation of articles and bodies

Session 2 - Witnesses, Criminology and Crime Investigation 

Thursday 20th June 2019

Witnesses

  • Eye Witness - reliability, factors affecting EWT/memory recall,
  • Interview techniques - research, open questions, behaviour and body language, silence
  • Compufit and facial reconstructions

Profiling

  • Geographical Profiling – mental mapping, environment,
  • Criminal/Victim profiling, life, relationships, employment, influences
  • Forensic linguistics - profiling via the written word, environment, educational standard, age, employment and hobbies, locality

 Crime scene investigations

Putting your new learnt skills into practise as you are tasked with processing a crime scene, including identifying, recording, collecting and packaging evidence authentically, Once scenes are processed you will analyse collected evidence and decide on courses of action and investigation to try to solve the crime.
