Description

A free lecture for sixth formers and the general public sponsored by THE ARTS SOCIETY WREKIN

NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON'T

An in-depth look at the profound mystery of perception.

by Bertie Pearce

A free lecture for sixth formers and the general public sponsored by THE ARTS SOCIETY WREKIN

Bertie Pearce is a much loved and well-known national lecturer for THE ARTS SOCIETY as well being a professional magician. His illustrated talk will include many fascinating slides and a little bit of magic to demonstrate how artists through the centuries have incorporated optical illusions in their work. Artists such as Rene Magritte, Hans Holbein, Van Hoogstraten, Kurt Wenner, Banksy, Arcimboldo, Salvador Dali, Rob Gonslaves, Escher, Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley will feature strongly.
There is an eternal fascination with the unfathomable, the weird ambiguous state of seeing things which are not there – yet are there. It carries us back into that long gone deeply missed period of our
childhood when magic was common place and when the boundary between the possible and the impossible was very blurred. In the same way as a magic trick surprises and delights us there is a primal enjoyment in being deceived by optical illusions. Since Roman times illusions have been used in art. The stretching and distorting of perspective has been highly developed by artists to create a range of effects on the viewer.

Bertie Pearce is a Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star and has performed all over the world. In 2003 he was awarded the Carlton Comedy Award by the Magic Circle and twice won the award for Originality from The International Brotherhood of Magicians. In 2009 he became an accredited Lecturer for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies and has toured extensively sharing his passion for Magic, Art, Punch and Judy, Victorian Pastimes and Charles Dickens. His love of people and performance ensures that there is always a new and exciting gig around the corner.
