What is the Welsh Ranking Series?

The Welsh Ranking Series is the selection process of choosing the Welsh Lifesaving Team. The Welsh Lifesaving Team is the group of athletes selected to compete for SLSA Wales in several national and international events.

Welsh Team athletes are selected through a transparent process based on attendance and performance at the Ranking Series. The results from the ranking are submitted by welsh team management board for scrutiny and a team of athletes is agreed.

 How will the ranking events work?

Ranking 1 will be competed over the following disciplines:
2 x Beach flags, 2 x Beach sprints, 1 x Swim, 1 x Board, 1x Ski and 1 x Ocean Man / Women.
Ranking 2 will be competed over the following disciplines:
2 x Swim, 2 x Board ,2 x ski , 1 x Beach sprints, 1 x flags and 1 x Ocean Man / Women.

 In the sea events all male competitors both youth and open competitors will go in as one group, in the event of heats the seniors will be evenly mixed into the heats. The same will happen for the Female competitors. For beach flags competitors will compete in youth category and senior category then the final 8 in each age group will then be mixed together for the final 16.

Beach sprints the youth will run in age groups up to the last 8 competitors, the seniors will run the same then they will be mixed to run a semi and then a final.

 Who is running the ranking?

The ranking will be fully managed and set up by SLSA Wales officials. The ranking will be overseen by a qualified referee and all ranking competition arenas will conform to ILS regulations

 Is other ranking dates?

No. There is only two trial dates 27th May & 3rd June.

 How do I declare my availability for selection?

All athletes can declare their interest in selection by completing this form online or registering on the day at the event. Even with online registration you still need to pay a £5 entry fee on the day at the registration desk.

 When is the closing date for declarations of interest?

You can register online until 8pm 26th May 2018. After that time, you will need to register on the morning of the event.

 What are the Selection Criteria for the Welsh Team and who selects the Team?

Welsh Team Managers, Coaches and Selectors use the results from the rankings to select athletes.

Athletes who will be 16 years and over will be eligible for the Open Team. Athletes must be at least 13 years and 17 years or under by 31/12/17 to be eligible for the Youth Team. The selectors will pick the competitor in the team they want to for obtaining the best team possible.

Athletes will know their strongest events, all athletes declaring for the ranking are expected to enter as many events as you want to. There is no obligation on any athlete seeking selection to compete in all the disciplines listed in this ranking event. 

 Selection Criteria

  1. Only individual athletes who are in membership of SLSA Wales are eligible for selection. Athletes must be in good standing with SLSA Wales to represent Wales lifesaving. Athletes membership will be checked by SLSA Wales

  2. The Welsh Team will always be selected based on the best athletes available and eligible for selection.

  3. The Welsh Team will be selected by a clear process based on an individual athlete’s potential to contribute the highest number of points in both individual and team events.

  4. Only individual athletes with a current valid award for all the ranking events and the welsh team competitions are eligible for selection. Please make sure your award does not run out between the rankings and the Welsh team competition.

  5. Only athlete able to compete on both the 16th June 2018 and 4th August 2018 will be eligible for selection.

 When will I know if I have been selected to compete in the welsh team?

The results from the ranking will be published online as soon as we are able to do this.

The Athletes selected to represent Wales (6 athletes per gender, per team) will be announced as soon as possible after the second ranking event. Successful athletes will be contacted via email.
