About this event

The Wemyss Caves

Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere - still in the place they were made over 1,500 years ago.

Located on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols and animal figures.

The Tour

This is a shortened tour of the site and covers 5,000 years of human activity through visits to Court Cave and Doo Cave. This tour will take around 45 minutes.

Although open to everyone, it is particularly designed for people who are less mobile. A new accessible path makes it suitable for users of mobility scooters and wheelchairs.

You can of course enjoy the remainder of the site (which includes more Pictish carvings, the remains of medieval Macduff Castle, crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and a depiction of an early medieval boat). Guidebooks are available to help you get the most out of what you will see should you chose to explore further, but it is only accessible by climbing 90 steps.

We can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can't take anyone who turns up without a booking.

Please park along the seafront at East Wemyss and make your way to the signposted start point outside Court Cave.

All tours are given free of charge, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable us to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.

For the protection of both visitors and volunteers we will be following all government health advice and guidance in force at the time of your visit.
