Event description

Description

As part of their September Wemyss Ware pottery exhibition, The Victor Murphy Trust are holding a series of talks to help complement the exhibition. The talk will commence prompt at 2pm upstairs in the cinema room and John Ferguson (Trustee of The Victor Murphy Trust), Graeme Cruickshank and Griselda Hill will be the speakers.

Representing the Trust, John Ferguson, trustee, will give a slideshow presentation on the background of Wemyss Ware through the creation of Fife Pottery and the running of the pottery before and during Wemyss Ware. This will be followed by images of items and examples of the signature of the main decorators based on the research of Norval Bonney.

The second talk will be by Graeme Cruickshank and will be entitled:

  • "Aspects of Wemyss Ware production: inception and demise"

The third talk will be by Griselda Hill and will be entitled:

  • "The Return of Wemyss Ware® to Fife, 1985 to Today"

In this short talk Griselda will explain her motivation for reviving Wemyss Ware® close to its Kirkcaldy birthplace, and some of the triumphs and tribulations of running the Pottery for over thirty years.

Expected talk ending time 3.15pm

Should anyone wish to see further examples of the Wemyss Ware decorators signatures, then after the talk at 3.30pm and downstairs in the exhibition room we will show some small items from the cabinets with their signatures.

The event starts at 2pm on Tuesday 24 September at the French Institute for Scotland in West Parliament Square. It's FREE (donations welcome), but please let us know if you are planning to come along so that we have an idea of numbers.

We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
