Event description

Description

This year's The Women's Engineering Society's Caroline Haslett Prestige Lecture focusses on 'Women in tech: what challenges do we face today?' Dame Stephanie Shirley will be our guest lecturer offering an insight into what her experiences have taught her, what we need to be doing in the future, and how we can engage as women but also as men to think about inclusivity in the workplace.

Dame Shirley will also be signing copies of her memoir.

Dame Stephanie Stephanie Shirley (83) arrived in England as an unaccompanied child refugee in 1939 and became a successful IT entrepreneur turned philanthropist.  In the 1960s, she founded a pioneering all-woman software company in the UK, which made millionaires of 70 of her team. Since retiring in 1993, her focus has been increasingly on philanthropy, focused on IT and her late son’s disorder of autism.

In addition to the Lecture, the evening will also include the presentation of the Karen Burt Award. This most prestigious WES award is awarded to the best newly qualified woman Chartered Engineer. It is an annual award to encourage more women to aim for and celebrate the achievement of Chartered Engineer status.
