The West Midlands Anti-Slavery Network connects the various agencies involved in tackling modern day slavery in the West Midlands and beyond. They recently were awarded Big Lottery Funding to develop a 'place of safety' project for adult male suvivors of human trafficking or modern slavery post-rescue and prior to entering the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). Volunteers will be an essential part of creating a welcoming, warm and safe environment for survivors to recover whilst they make an informed decision about their future.

Human trafficking or trafficking in persons is defined by the UN in the Palermo Protocol as the act of: “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons.”
By the means of,
“threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.” (Article 3a, Palermo Protocol, 2000).
Exploitation for modern slavery purposes is defined to include: sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude and organ trafficking.
Importantly, trafficking in the UK occurs not just internationally, but domestically across regions. Find more info about Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking in the UK here:
