Event description

Description

Come and see the police and court custody facility that operated for 125 years, only closing last year. The historic Grade II listed lock-up facility retains many of its original Victorian features combined with more modern custody facilities, demonstrating how a small 'prison' operated in the centre of a busy city for well over a century.

Brought to you in conjunction with Birmingham's Hidden Spaces, this is an evening event as part of 3 days of public access into the lock-up, offering a unique insight into the operating of the lock-up and policing in Birmingham since the inception of the Birmingham City Police back in 1839. With a chance to browse many of the museum's artefacts and fascinating pictures from the archives, hear some of the stories of heroism and bravery of past officers and see what prisoners would have been resident in the lock-up in the late 1800s.

During this special evening event you will have the chance to browse freely round the facility, go into some of the cells, interact with the museum exhibits and continue the discovery at home with a free copy of The Lock-up booklet. This year marks the centenary of female police officers in the West Midlands and to celebrate we have a special women in policing display and will be selling copies of our book A Fair Cop (all profits for this book go to local women's charities).

The evening event also includes a talk on the history of policing Birmingham, the Victorian lock-up facility and some of the stories of officers past.

Please note due to the nature and age of the facility there is currently no access for mobility impaired guests due to the large amounts of steps and lack of a disability access lift.

You are advised to wear suitable and comfortable footwear (e.g. no stiletto heels) as there are three floors to view and some of the landings have small holes which could trap heels.

Please note that photographs will be taken during these events which could be used as publicity material for the museum in the future and may therefore be published on social media.
