About this event

West Midlands Public Sector Buying Community Event

On Tuesday, 25 and Wednesday, 26 May 2021, we will again be with you online for our second West Midlands Public Sector Virtual Buying Community event. We will be bringing you two sessions starting at 10am each day and each will last around an hour and a half. These sessions will be led by a guest speaker(s) and explore topics designed to support you and your commercial colleagues. We will have breakout sessions to discuss best practices and challenges - an ideal opportunity to network, collaborate and build relationships.

Please feel free to sign up for one or both sessions - whatever matches your interests and availability - you are most welcome!

Please note: these events are specifically for buyers within the public sector, and discussions will reflect this. If you are a supplier, these sessions are not designed for you and we will, on this occasion, have to reject your registration.

Tuesday 25 May

Topic: Income Generation in the Wider Public Sector

Description : Public sector organisations have been under significant financial pressure for a number of years and Covid-19 has only served to increase this pressure. This session will look at ways in which those organisations can generate income for the betterment of the communities they serve. Our first speaker, Matt Wallbank, in his dual function of Strategic Creditors and Procurement Manager, will suggest how income can be generated/saved through strong financial controls and innovative procurement.

Speaker : Matthew Wallbank, Head of Strategic Creditors and Procurement (Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council)
Matthew Wallbank has worked at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, within the procurement team, for over 5 years being appointed as the Strategic Creditors and Procurement Manager from November 2019 covering procurement, accounts payable and e-purchasing.

Wednesday 26 May

Topic: Smart projects, sustainability & security mindedness

Description : As government ecosystems and industry stakeholders consider how to deliver infrastructure, applications and services transformation, there will be both a pressure, and an opportunity, to accelerate the thinking that has been driving change; delivering smarter, state-of-the-art programmes more efficiently, secure and collaboratively. David will talk about how to embed elements of standardisation and best practice within digital enabled procurement programmes, how this can help to reduce performance and security gaps that underpin new collaborative delivery models and drive trust across stakeholder communities. He will also explain the importance and value of standardisation as a way of creating common, repeatable approaches that leverage shared knowledge to work more efficiently and securely.

Speakers : David Cuckow, Head of Digital, British Standards Institution (BSI); Peter Lee, Business Development & Consulting Manager, BSI; and Dawn Hare, Strategic Business Manager, Crown Commercial Service (CCS)
David Cuckow is responsible for the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB) global strategy on all things digital, supporting cross-sector industries and government stakeholders to innovate by accelerating the adoption of digital technologies, identifying and codifying best practice in order to transform and improve business, process and culture for both social and economic benefit.
Peter Lee is Business Development & Consulting Manager for BSI, with a focus on smart sustainable cities and communities, internet of things (IoT), transport, 5G and digital twins. 13 years local government and 17 years telecoms and digital experience.
