Westminster Libraries Poetry Reading Group (Remembrance)
Event Information
About this Event
Join us, once a month, for a light and insightful discussion on some of the most celebrated works of poetry as well as brand new releases.
If you are looking for something positive to distract you in these strange and awkward times, then look no further. We are transporting the traditional library reading group to the digital world; we aim to be a fun and friendly discussion group centred on a theme, style or poet (usually chosen beforehand).
There is no pressure to read the poetry "inside and out", any interpretation you can provide to the discussion will be treated with respect and interest.
This virtual poetry reading group is free and open to those willing to participate, we are welcome to all.
To commemorate this years Remembrance month, we will touch upon the some most revered poetry from the fallen soldiers as well as those that lived to tell their stories in person. Wilfred Owen, being one of the leading poets of the First World War, discussed a wide variety of subjects, from "joining the war", "coming back home" and of course attempting to deal with the many trials and tribulations of combat itself - although not an accurate reflection of every war experience, Wilfred Owen 's poetry represents the complexity of war that has fascinated many generations after his death in combat.
We will also be discussing how his poetry has been utilized by other creators, mainly in the realms of music, most notably in Benjamin Britten's composed piece War Requiem. Can music transform poetry? If so, how? We will also look at how other poets from across the world discussed war between 1914 -1918, are they similar to Wilfred Owen?
Which poetry? Wilfred Owen and others
When? Monday 30th December between 6pm - 7pm.
How? - We will be using Zoom, so register through this event to receive the Zoom link.
