About this event
In this day session we will make a pair of cosy wrist warmers, to prevent “airy” gaps up your sleeve, with the ease of using your fingers. Scrolling on your phone, clipping on the dog’s lead and taking out your bank card with be an ease!
Using soft cosy Merino wool, you will be guided in the ancient technique of wet felting, a method used even before 6000 BCE which magically changes woolly “fluff” into a beautiful firm textile. You will learn how to use a “resist” or template to make them in a seamless way- no sewing is involved in the making, although you can go wild with stitching to decorate them later, In your own time, once they are dry!
There will be a variety of both natural and dyed Merino to choose from, and handling samples will be available during the day for further inspiration. You will go home with your very own individual pair. The technique of using a resist template is extremely versatile- using a template opens you up to possibilities for other 3D items – such as gloves and mitts, but tea cosies, festive decorations, hats, bags and much more!
All materials and equipment will be provided, but please bring a small hand towel and a used (but clean!) tea towel with you on the day for your personal use.
Artist bio:
Margaret Chalmers
Starting with my dollies’ clothes, I have always been a “maker”, and love working with all sorts of yarns, textiles and threads – knitting, hand and machine stitching, dressmaking, pattern drafting, and simple tailoring. I was introduced to the ancient technique of (wet) felting on an HND textiles course at Craven College, Skipton, and was completely blown away! As a result, I have been a feltmaker now for about 15 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how woolly “fluff” can be transformed into such different outcomes by adding only water, agitation and some patience. I love teaching this ancient technique, and seeing others delight in this amazing alchemy!
When attending a workshop you can receive 10% off within the Gallery Shop on the day of your session.
