Friday 24th – Saturday 25th October

South West Optics is delighted to invite birders, wildlife enthusiasts, and outdoor explorers to a two-day optics showcase at Otter Estuary Nature Reserve. Running from Friday 24th to Saturday 25th October, this exciting event combines expert-led insights, hands-on product testing, and live demonstrations in one of Devon’s most inspiring birdwatching locations.

For anyone searching for the best binoculars for birdwatching in Devon, tips on choosing thermal imaging for wildlife spotting, or an introduction to night vision wildlife watching in the UK, this weekend is not to be missed.

Friday 24th October – Explore & Connect

South West Optics will open the weekend displaying a wide selection of binoculars, spotting scopes, and thermal optics. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your current setup or simply curious about the latest in optical innovation, our team will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate products perfect for estuary and woodland birding.

Saturday 25th October – Expert Demos from 10AM

2:00 PM | Get the Best Out of Your Binoculars Workshop

Supported by world-leading brands Swarovski, Kowa and HIKMICRO, this event is ideal for birdwatchers at every level. Russell Welton will share insider techniques to fine-tune your binoculars, ensuring you achieve pin-sharp views of everything from migrating waders to woodland warblers.

Key topics include:

Diopter adjustment for sharper focus

Setting inter-pupillary distance to eliminate “black spots”

Eyecup optimisation for wider fields of view

Eye relief adjustments for comfort during long birdwatching sessions

Choosing the best binoculars and spotting scopes for estuary birding, woodland walks, and travel

This workshop is a must for anyone serious about improving their birdwatching experience and getting the most from their optics.

4:00 PM | HIKMICRO Nightwatch Demonstration with Craig Miles

Craig Miles will lead an atmospheric HIKMICRO Nightwatch demonstration. This is a rare opportunity to explore the cutting-edge world of night vision wildlife watching in the UK.

Craig will guide attendees through:

Which thermal imaging devices are best for bats, mammals, and nocturnal birds

Capturing photos and videos of wildlife after dark

Sharing footage instantly to tablets and devices for group wildlife viewing

If you’ve ever wanted to see what happens at the estuary when the lights go out, this demonstration will open a whole new world.
