National Conference March 2021

What About The Children? What Lasts a Lifetime?

Speakers: Steve Biddulph, Naomi Stadlen

This year What About The Children? will be holding their 2021 national conference online via a series of webinars.

What Lasts a Lifetime? is the second virtual What About the Children? Conference. The pandemic has caused us to stop and reflect on the needs of children and their families. Adults and children have all faced unexpected challenges in the last year. Our early childhood memories are likely to be rather patchy, especially memories of our first three years. However, research confirms that the earliest years, from conception to three, impact on us and continue to do so throughout our lives. Our Conference Speakers, Steve Biddulph and Naomi Stadlen, explore how early experiences and the role of the family influence us. Naomi will talk about mothering at this critical time, whilst Steve will consider how research and therapy have converged to challenge us as human beings, and how our actions can support our children throughout their lifetime.

Steve Biddulph - Title of presentation “Being Human”

Steve Biddulph is one of the world’s best known authors writing about parenting. A practising psychologist for 30 years, he is now retired but continues to write and teach.

His books, including ‘The Secret of Happy Children’; ‘Raising Boys’; ‘The new Manhood’ and ‘10 Things Girls Need Most’, are in 4 million homes and are translated in 31 languages. They have influenced how we look at childhood and initially concentrated on the development of boys and men. Today though, the mental health of girls and young women is also a major focus. His latest book, ‘Fully Human’, will be published in May.

Naomi Stadlen -Title of presentation “Mothering During the Pandemic”

I am a mother of three, and grandmother of three. I have run Mothers Talking, a weekly discussion group for mothers, for thirty years. It has been online for the past eleven months and much appreciated. I also hold monthly meetings of breastfeeding mothers for La Leche League. I live in London and work, as does my husband, as a psychotherapist. Based on all this, I have written three books published by Piatkus: ‘What Mothers Do - especially when it looks like nothing’ (2004); ‘ Mothers Love - and how relationships are born’ (2011), and ‘What Mothers Learn - without being taught’ (2020).
