This sculpture-focused event explores the relationship between material-based sculpture and new digital immersive tools.

About this event

Physical sculpture and three-dimensional work are integral to fine art practice. Cornwall has been home to sculptors with diverse practices and intentions, such as Barbara Hepworth, Tim Shaw, Ithell Colquhoun and Samvado. Such work is concerned with the way that matter occupies space as well as the diverse malleability and properties of materials. Approaches cut across styles and tactilities, from heroic to expressionist, from smooth to pocketed, maquette to monumental, environmental to architectural.

The aim of this sculpture-focused event is to look at the relationship between material-based sculpture and new digital 3D modelling techniques. What do they share? Does digital sculpture offer new possibilities? Can the two forms be bridged? Does digital sculpture enable a link between two-dimensional drawing and painting and sculpture? Can digital approaches bring a wider audience to sculpture? This event opens these questions for discussion and your participation.

You will have a chance to experience a range of new digital 3-D immersive technologies and participate in a workshop that will introduce you to a basic and freely available 3D modelling tool, Blender. There will be presentations from the Immersive Business team as well as short talks from Neil Armstrong, curator, and owner of Tremenheere Sculpture Park, and from Professor Penny Florence, digital poet and writer on sculpture.

The audience for this event is Cornwall-based artists, working in 2D and 3D contexts; as such the focus of the event will be on exploring new possibilities, discussion, and 'hands-on' trials.

Lunch will be provided. You will need to book this event using this link to Eventbrite.
