About the Day
This workshop will explore the Accreditation requirement for documentation planning and retrospective documentation, and related SPECTRUM procedures. Together we will look at tackling backlogs and the benefits of effective documentation planning, as well as the ways in which museum documentation can contribute to increased access and engagement with collections. The session will also introduce considerations for choosing a Collections Management System.
Delegates will be encouraged to participate through discussions and activities, and there will be plenty of opportunity for questions throughout.
Case studies will also be presented by your colleagues in the South West region.

Museum staff and volunteers involved in creating and planning museum documentation, as well as those who use collections information in their role.
Those considering purchasing a Collections Management System, for the first time or to replace an existing CMS.

How does this course support you to achieve and maintain Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?
The course supports the following Requirements of the Accreditation Standard:
2.3 Documentation Policy, 2.5 Documentation Plan, 2.7 Documentation Procedures and 3.3.2 Access to Collections and Associated Information – good documentation is fundamental to meeting Accreditation standards. Without it the objects in your collection are in limbo and the experience you are able to give your users is reduced.
This session will be led by Sarah Brown, Outreach Officer for Collections Trust. Sarah joined Collections Trust in late April 2016. Originally training as a conservator, Sarah has worked in a variety of collections management and care roles across the UK, including National Museums Scotland and Powell-Cotton Museum in Kent.
As part of Collections Trust’s Arts Council England funded Activity Plan, Sarah will be delivering around 100 events across the English regions, developed in collaboration with the ACE Museum Development teams. The programme will be varied, with themes and delivery approach responding to local needs, ranging from digitisation to documentation planning and backlogs.
