Event description

Description

Ever looked at a monkey and it's reminded you of your uncle, mum or best mate? Well, you may not be wrong. We share so much with our primate cousins that it's almost impossible to find something 'exclusively human'. In this fun talk, biologist Ben Garrod delves into truly human behaviours. Is it love, or hate? Is it because we are cultured or is it something very different? Come along and find out what separates 'us and them'.

Anthropologist Louis Leakey declared in 1963: “We must redefine ‘tool’, redefine ‘man’, or accept chimpanzees as humans”. Since then, our closest relations have been observed making weapons and engaging in both play and warfare.

Evolutionary biologist Ben Garrod takes a lighthearted look at whether we need to redefine what it means to be Homo Sapiens and questions whether or not humans are unique.
