Description

St Paul's Road Area Residents Association - SPRA and the Cheltenham Civic Society are hosting a public meeting on 8th April, 6:30pm at St. Paul’s Church, St Paul's Rd, Cheltenham GL50 4EZ. The purpose of the meeting is to try to creatively resolve the issues of Boots Corner and promote solutions, through the Cheltenham Civic Society, to the relevant authorities.

We have seen that traffic ‘finds its way’ is not a satisfactory solution. No amount of tweaking will solve the issue. A larger perhaps more radical plan could. The purpose of this meeting is see if such a solution is possible.

We do not want to hear just for and against the trial. There are established methods for doing that, petitions, presentations to Council etc. The latest Council vote was clearer than the Brexit referendum that the trial will be extended. Whatever we feel, we now need to move on and instead of shouting at each other, calling each other names, we need to find a solution.
To find a solution we need to understand and define the problem.

Let us assume that the Council wishes to close Boots Corner. That is a problem because it has had effects. Effects on businesses, residents and visitors. Businesses need to thrive, residents do not want to be polluted and jammed in queues, and visitors need clarity of cross town routes. Buses and taxis and deliveries need access to the centre. If there are clearly marked routes signposted that do not pollute residential streets, it would mostly solve this problem. So now the problem becomes ‘where are these routes’? Can we look at a whole town solution, not just a few streets in the centre but range out as far as it is necessary to provide viable alternative to ’traffic finds its way’.

Let us together find a way that constructively addresses that issue and clearly signposts car drivers around the centre through routes that reduces residential pollution, reduces traffic jam hot spots and allows buses, deliveries etc. access to the business centre and improves the pedestrian and cyclist experience. In effect, a whole town solution.

The meeting will be chaired by Andrew Booton, chair of the Cheltenham Civic Society, and will be in a Question Time format. We are in the process of confirming the panel, which will include Alex Chalk MP. The public are encouraged to ask questions. Please submit your questions to this email address BootsCornerMeeting@gmail.com by Thursday 4th April, and we will endeavour to hear as many as possible. Later in the meeting, if time permits, we will allow anyone present to ask further questions to the panel. Tickets are available via Eventbrite, with some available on the door. There is no entry charge! At the end of the meeting free tea and coffee will be served.
