What does freedom mean to us today? Showcase of artworks.
Join us in celebrating Our Freedom: Then and Now, a new national project marking 80 years since VE Day. Through art workshops, that highlight the inclusivity of library spaces, and the freedom found in creativity, local people have reflected on freedom — past and present — to create artworks rooted in their own community stories.
During creative workshops at the library, participants — including children from Wolborough Primary School, families at Newton’s Place Museum, and local knitting and community groups — explored the heritage of VE Day.
Central to Newton Abbot’s story is its remarkable War Memorial, one of only three in the country to depict a woman. The “Figure of Freedom,” shown breaking the chains of oppression. She has inspired the artworks sharing contemporary reflections on freedom.
These reflections culminate in co-created artworks with artist Athena Jane Churchill displayed in each library in Newton Abbot, Barnstaple and Exeter with a final showcase in Exeter uniting three distinct communities across Devon -as their artworks combine into one thought provoking piece.
Come and see the evocative artwork, tell us what makes you feel free, and be part of the celebration.
