Join us in celebrating Our Freedom: Then and Now, a new national project marking 80 years since VE Day. Through art workshops, that highlight the inclusivity of library spaces, and the freedom to be found in creativity, local people have reflected on freedom — past and present — to create artworks rooted in their own community stories.
· Barnstaple: Finding peace and freedom in the face of our own challenges.
· Newton Abbot: Honouring the town’s war memorial, one of only three depicting a woman- “The Figure of Freedom” breaking chains of oppression.
· Exeter: Remembering the Blitz and Exeter’s rebuilding as a symbol of hope.
These reflections will culminate in beautiful co-created artworks with artist Athena Jane Churchill displayed in each library, with a final showcase in Exeter uniting these three distinct communities across Devon and their artworks as one thought provoking piece.
Come and see the evocative artwork, share your story of freedom, and be part of the celebration.
the Exhibition will be free to view, and held on the ground floor at Exeter Library. It runs from Saturday 8th November to Saturday 6th December during library opening hours.
