Despite the success of subtitled drama series on UK TV, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distribute foreign language European films to UK cinemas. It isn’t just a language issue, so what is different about European filmmaking compared to Hollywood? Is filmmaking in the UK more like the rest of Europe or more like Hollywood? How will Brexit affect European Cinema?
The day will address all these questions through a case study of one French filmmaker, Katell Quillévéré, with a full screening of Suzanne (France 2013, Cert 12, 90 mins) and extracts from her first feature, Un poison violent (France 2010). Ms Quillévéré is considered an 'auteur' filmmaker. We’ll consider what this means and how she is helped by French cultural policies and major film festivals. France has the biggest film industry, but French ideas about cinema are also important elsewhere in Europe and will help us to see the larger picture.
