This seminar with Professor Robert Gibbs, University of Toronto, will focus on the question:

What is the University’s Responsibility?

This explores a tension in the task of research between the idea of freedom and the idea of responsibility by addressing three questions:

1. What is education for a profession?


2. What makes the university more than a sum of different faculties?

3. Where do research questions come from?

Professor Gibbs will briefly offer an overview of the Introduction to his current work The Future of Research Universities: Ideas in Dialogue, and will also discuss the connection to the urban epistemology and the idea of a permeable university.

There will be some pre-reading available, which will be circulated closer to the seminar.
