What do we mean when we refer to an individual as ‘a good doctor? Is it a collection of characteristics that can be defined, or do we as clinical colleagues, students and as patients ‘know it when we see it’?

This lecture will describe how Judith has taken a paediatric approach based on her personal and professional values, insights and reflection on experience and applied this in a medical education context to develop and embed the qualities that enable medical students to become ‘good doctors’ capable of not only surviving, but thriving while enjoying their work in a complex and changing healthcare system that is the NHS today.

Professor Judith West is Deputy Head of Leicester Medical School at the University of Leicester. A graduate of the University of Birmingham, qualifying in medicine in 1983, she trained in Paediatrics and Paediatric respiratory medicine in NHS hospitals in the Midlands, in Bristol and at the Royal Children’s’ Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Professor West has worked as a Consultant Community Paediatrician in Leicester from 1996, and was awarded her MD in 1997 for research relating to lung infection and immune responses in young cystic fibrosis patients. She has held a number of senior educational leadership roles within the School of Medicine at the University of Leicester as Head of Student & Staff Support, as Deputy Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and was appointed Deputy Head of Leicester Medical School in 2017. Professor West was, until recently, the Director of Medical Education at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, supporting Foundation, Primary Care, Psychiatry and Community Paediatric trainees.

Professor West’s interest in medical education arose directly from her career as Paediatrician. She is active in education pedagogy in the field of medical student professional development, peer education, student and trainee support and the use of e-learning to develop professional attributes and student engagement with learning and reflective practice. She was awarded the Senior Fellowship in Higher Education in 2016 in recognition of her commitment to teaching and learning.
