About this Event

This form is crucial for our funding purposes (more detail below). You will only receive the Zoom link for the webinar if you have filled out this registration form.

What next for my business idea?

In this first full-day webinar workshop you’ll get invaluable insights into using local borough libraries' and the British Library Business & IP Centre’s resources to conduct research for your new business, learn how to protect - and continue protecting - your intellectual property and develop a strategic roadmap for your business.

Workshop itinerary:

Session 1: What next for my business idea? (10.00 - 13.00)

In the first part of the day, you will hear from our in-borough Business Champions on the resources available in boroughs to help you progress with your business research, even from home. Our Business & IP Centre Reference team will then cover:

  • How you can plan you research, using tools like the Business Model Canvas and Value Proposition Canvas
  • Different research sources and methods, including field research, customer development and Minimum Viable Product
  • Information sources at the British Library's BIPC.

Session 2: How to Protect a Business Idea (14.00 - 17.00)

In the second session, we will start to delve into what is unique in your business and how you can protect it and make money from it in the future. We will cover:

  • Patents
  • Registered Designs
  • Trademarks
  • Copyright
  • Know-how and Trade Secrets

Your business will definitely have some form of intellectual property, whether it is in the design, name, logo, brand or the product itself, so this a crucial stage in the success of your business. We will also cover other sources of IP support available at the British Library.

Throughout the session there will be generous breaks and time for questions.

Additional Registration Form

If you are new to Start-ups in London Libraries, please fill out this registration form as well as registering on Eventbrite. As this project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, this is important for our funding purposes. If you have previously taken part in any Start-ups in London Libraries workshop, you do not need to fill this out again. We will be sending the Zoom link the day before the webinar and we will only be able to send it to the people who have filled out a registration form.

Please make sure that you have read the eligibility criteria at the bottom of the page before registering.

This is the first part of a two-day offering. To make the most of the free business support offered by the Start-ups in London Libraries project, please also book to attend the Day 2 webinar - 'Get ready for business'- alongside this workshop. These workshops have been designed for people who have had a registered business for less than a year, or those with a business idea they want to develop.

Please contact with any queries.

The project is fully funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the British Library, ten participating London boroughs and generously supported by JP Morgan and Arts Council England.
