What shape is the feeling? Working with poetic forms to explore early motherhood
with Erica Hesketh
September 17th, 10:30-12:30 BST, online, live ticket: £20, playback-only: £10
(recording will be sent out within a week after end of event)
In this friendly and accessible session, poet and editor Erica Hesketh (In the Lily Room) explores a range of old and new poetic forms as a tool for writing into experiences of matrescence and early motherhood. Whether it's haiku for fleeting moments, sestinas for recurring obsessions, sonnets to explore relationships, or couplings to challenge institutional authority, form has a lot to offer the mother who writes. Expect some technique, some inspiring examples, some good conversation and hopefully some brand-new writing too.
Erica Hesketh is a poet and editor from Japan and Denmark, now based in London. Her poetry has been commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall, Spread the Word and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016 to 2024 she was Director of the Poetry Translation Centre. Her debut collection, In the Lily Room, is published by Nine Arches Press.
