About this Event

‘What the Medieval Doctor Ordered’ is an online, interactive talk and quiz. It offers a unique opportunity for anyone, anywhere, to find out more about the practice of medicine in Ireland and Scandinavia in the Middle Ages and about the transmission of medical knowledge throughout Western and Northern Europe at that time. As well as revealing unexpected cultural contacts, this event looks at some extraordinary examples of medieval medicalese and delves into ill-advised cures involving cats and plants and ants’ eggs. Best-suited to adults and older children, and especially recommended for families to play along at home!

This event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities, taking place 12–22 November. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. For further information please see beinghumanfestival.org.
