Description

What was Roman marriage like?

This year’s Friends of Classics memorial lecture will be given by Gregory Hutchinson, Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford.

Our ideas of what marriage is like in our own society are much less fixed than was once the case. It's interesting to see how people in the Roman world presented their own marriages, and ideas about those marriages, or about marriages in general. Idealizations and ideals tell us things; but we also get glimpses of rows, discussions, and problems within particular relationships. The evidence is richly varied, and includes funerary inscriptions, funerary art, the houses in which these marriages were set, letters and biographies, narrative poems and fragments of legal treatises. Looking at some of the evidence will draw us into the fascination of complex relationships and a complex culture, which speak to our own experience.

Professor Hutchinson has written books on various authors, periods, and subjects in Greek and Latin literature; he is just finishing a book on motion in ancient literature.

There will be plenty of time for questions after the talk over refreshments.

About Classics for All

Classics for All (CfA) is a national charity founded in 2010 to reverse the decline in classics teaching (Latin, Ancient Greek, ancient history, classical civilisation) in state schools and to raise the aspirations and attainment of young people. CfA is the only organisation that offers Continuing Professional Development for non-specialist teachers keen to establish an after school club or make classics part of the curriculum. Since our launch, we have supported 800 primary and secondary schools, benefitting more than 45,000 pupils across the UK.

Classics for All is a Registered Charity (no. 1135379)
