Event description
The Henry Jackson Society is delighted to invite you to a presentation and discussion on the importance of empowering women.

About this Event

Across the world women and girls are educated and indoctrinated into believing that their bodies are something to be ashamed of. This book breaks taboos. In a survey of 42 accounts from 14 countries, Nimko Ali gives voice to women across the globe, sharing intimate experiences of their rites of passage: from periods to menopause, sex to sexual health, pregnancy and childbirth to everything in-between. Staggering statistics are revealed throughout – but Ali goes beyond the headlines, as well as any religious, generational and socio-cultural divides. We hear snapshots about the trauma of childbirth after FGM, the struggle of period sanitation when homeless, and the challenges of sensuality and pleasure after abuse. These provocative, inspiring and painful stories highlight the shame faced by women when it comes to their anatomy, and the importance of having frank and raw discussions about things we are told not to talk about.

Nimco Ali OBE
