What’s a PhD All About?

Session 1: An Introduction

Curious about pursuing a social science PhD but not sure what it involves or how it will benefit your future career? Wondering how you can get funding to do a PhD? Join us for the first session in our series, in which we’ll break down what a PhD in the social sciences is and the benefits that doing one can bring you, and give an overview of funding from a Doctoral Training Partnership like the Midlands Graduate School.

In this session, you will:

  • Learn about what a PhD is and why you should do one.
  • Gain insights into the value of a PhD and how it can open doors in academia and beyond.
  • Understand the main funding available for social science PhDs and the benefits of obtaining this funding.
  • Ask questions in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Whether you're still figuring out your next steps or just want to explore your options, this session is a great place to start.

Who should attend?
This session is aimed at anyone who thinks they might be interested in pursuing a PhD, and we would particularly welcome attendees from groups which are historically underrepresented in academia, including first-generation university students, students from ethnic minority backgrounds, and those from low-income backgrounds.

If you are currently an undergraduate student you can still apply for funding from us – we will fund a Masters in Social Science Research prior to your PhD!
