What’s fake about the news, and how can we tell? | Online seminar
Event Information
About this Event
Can a hair dryer stop the coronavirus? Do monkeys live on the moon? The answer to each is, “No.” But why do people still believe these things in the news? And what about other questions that might be more difficult to answer, such as “Are our elections safe from manipulation?” or “Is climate change real or fake?” In this talk, we will work through the problems and challenges of mis- and dis-information that appear in social media and in the news. And, we will explore some of the online tools that we can use to measure “facts” and see if the images and ideas that we see and share are based in truth – or degrees of truth.
