Description

GDPR should not be feared. In fact, it should be welcomed.

There’s been unbelievable hype around the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which is coming into force in May 2018. A quick Google search retrieves a staggering 4 million results!

But how do you ensure compliance without buying into the hype that the €20M fines have created?

It is true that Data Protection law is undergoing the most significant changes in 20 years. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU). With its introduction, the Data Protection Act 1998 will be superseded and all businesses, regardless of size or nature will need to comply.

Yet understood and implemented correctly, GDPR has significant commercial advantages.

In our experience, too many companies go straight into trying to create the processes or technology to safeguard against GDPR without gaining the right foundations first. We believe that before anything can be done to prepare for the law effectively, one must first understand what the law seeks to achieve. Once that understanding is gained, the commercial benefits of GDPR can be realised such as building brand trust, creating leaner processes and strengthening customer relationships.

Seeking to merely safeguard against the law without understanding it, is short-term thinking and limited in its effectiveness.

Join us for a practical 3-hour training session where we will dispel any myths, break down the main GDPR principles simply and clearly, explain what rights your customers and employees have and talk through the changes brought in regarding exporting data.

If you would like to delve deeper and gain more practical guidance on how to achieve compliance within your organisation, you may attend the full 1.5 day course in which we will provide you with step by step guide on the areas you need to consider, processes you need to introduce, legal documents and policies required and case studies to test your understanding.

GDPR Training will be delivered as follows:

1. GDPR Basic - A 3 hours overview on the following topics:

  • GDPR in detail

  • The 6+1 principle of GDPR

  • Data Subject Rights

  • Defining “Controller” and “Processor”

  • Exporting Data

2. GDPR Intensive - Please note that the 3 hour basic is a prerequisite for the 1 day course. The one day course will expand on the contents of the 3-hour basic training. In addition, it will cover the more practical elements including:

    • The role of the Data Protection Officer

    • Taking appropriate security measures

    • Governance and Risk Management

    • Legal requirements for a Data Protection Impact Assessment and how to conduct one

    • Why and how to conduct a Data Mapping Exercise

    • Incident response and data breach reporting

    • Case study

On completion of the training course(s) you and your team members will have a good understanding of GDPR and what you need to do in order to be compliant with this new legislation.

With each session you will also have the opportunity to network with other businesses and share insights, experiences and concerns you may have about the new legislation.

Training will be provided by Electra Japonas, a qualified Lawyer from The Law Boutique, a legal consultancy. Electra takes a different approach to GDPR than the media and most companies that are selling GDPR solutions. Although the GDPR has been branded as a blocker to business that brings heavy fines and administrative burdens, Electra believes that "understanding the intention of the law and abiding by its ethos will in fact give companies a commercial advantage".

NOTE: we will not be able to provide individual advice during these sessions. The content of these sessions are not intended as legal advice.
