An opportunity to get up close and personal with trauma and addiction expert Gabor Mate

About this event

Do you work in the field of Trauma or Addiction or have an interest in this subject?

Do you have a family member whose addictive behaviours are causing distress and you do not understand what is happening?

Would you like to know the answers?

Are you using substances to numb yourself yet have no idea why?

Or you know exactly why, and you are just looking to escape the pain?

Or are you just someone who loves Dr Gabor Mates work?

Well, this is the webinar for you. When Vivian Met Gabor – In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is offering you an opportunity to get up close with Dr Gabor.

In this webinar you will hear Dr Gabor's fascinating take on Topics such as:

• What is the source of addictions?

• What happens chemically and physiologically in the brains of people with substance dependency or behaviour addiction?

• The false “blessings” of addiction as experienced by the person (e.g., as emotional anaesthetic, as personality booster, as social lubricant, and so on;).

• The development of the addicted mind: how early childhood experiences shape the brain.

• The social basis of addiction in economic, cultural, and political dislocation and disempowerment.

• How much choice does the person really have, and how much responsibility?

• Developing a therapeutic relationship in which healing is possible.

• How to encourage the person to take responsibility.

• The prevention of addiction, both in adolescence and before.

Who is Vivian McKinnon? In her work, both personally and professionally, Vivian has explored, witnessed and lived through the effects of early life trauma.

Having many adverse childhood experiences, Vivian's teenage and early adult life became about avoiding the pain of the past. After a near death experience in 1999 she has now spent the last 22 years on her own personal recovery journey and in doing so inspired others to seek the root cause of their pain.

While working in youth work, homelessness, trauma and addiction services across Scotland and Northern Ireland Vivian has gained the reputation of a proficient and life changing therapist and business owner.

Using floatation therapy as a personal healing tool, Vivian opened Hydro-ease, Northern Ireland's only dedicated floatation centre in 2015. As a Master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic programming, TimeLine therapy and Hypnosis, Havening practitioner, Clinical Hypnotherapist and SPECTTRUM performance and emotional coach Vivian began fusing her proprietary approach to trauma recovery and created her RAFT (Reconnection and Floatation Therapy).

Vivian's dedication to giving back and ensuring everyone is treated equally and fairly and has allowed her to nurture a connection with Dr Mate, and in 2018 Vivian welcomed him to Hydro-ease and facilitated his first experience of floatation therapy where he had this to say

"My experience of floatation at Hydro-ease in Belfast was a lovely introduction to this modality of healing.

After my hour suspended in the pool, my body freed from all external tension and my mind spared all sensory overstimulation. I found myself in a state of relaxation and a feeling of pleasant anticipation. I immediately saw how this technique could help ease many stress-related conditions in our frenetic culture"

Who is Gabor Mate? For twelve years Dr. Maté was the staff physician at a clinic for drug-addicted people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where he worked with patients challenged by hard-core drug addiction, mental illness and HIV, including at Vancouver Supervised Injection Site.

In his bestselling book In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts, he shows that their addictions do not represent a discrete set of medical disorders; rather, they merely reflect the extreme end of a continuum of addiction, mostly hidden, that runs throughout our society. In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts draws on cutting-edge science to illuminate where and how addictions originate and what they have in common.

Contrary to what is often claimed, the source of addictions is not to be found in genes, but in the early childhood environment where the neurobiology of the brain’s reward pathways develops and where the emotional patterns that lead to addiction are wired into the unconscious. Stress, both then and later in life, creates the predisposition for addictions, whether to drugs, alcohol, nicotine, or to behavioural addictions such as shopping or sex.

Helping the addicted individual requires that we appreciate the function of the addiction in his or her life. More than a disease, the addiction is a response to a distressing life history and life situation. Once we recognize the roots of addiction and the lack it strives (in vain) to fill, we can develop a compassionate approach toward the person, one that stands the best chance of restoring him or her to wholeness and health.

By investing in a ticket for this webinar, I invite you to submit a question to pose to Dr Gabor. Do you have a burning question around addiction, human disconnection, or the impact of trauma that you would like to ask Dr Gabor directly?

We will choose 4 or 5 questions and If your question is chosen you will then be offered the opportunity to come onto the webinar and ask Dr Gabor the question directly. You will also be invited to be part of our panel discussion at the end.

Vivian is hosting this conversation and discussion to dispel the myths around addiction so we can support people to heal from the pain of the past.

So many people are struggling right now and have no idea why.

So many people are living in isolation and using substances to cope.

So many people, right now, are waking up and realising life cannot continue in this way.

Are you one of them?

If so, I invite you to join us for a truly enlightening and intimate conversation with one of the greatest minds of our current times.

With your ticket you will also receive a FREE copy of Vivian's Ebook exploring the proprietary and evidence-based approach to trauma healing. Giving you an insight to her RAFT approach.
