Presenter:

Dr Julie Torode is Director of Special Projects for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a global non-government organisation dedicated to cancer prevention and control, with a membership network of more than 1200 cancer organisations in 173 countries. Based in Geneva, UICC brings the cancer community together by convening high-profile events, provides opportunities for members to strengthen their skills, knowledge and networks and leads effective advocacy to ensure cancer remains a priority with governments. Julie has held several roles at UICC and is currently dedicating time to support the World Health Organization-led global effort to accelerate elimination of cervical cancer.

Julie likes to deliver results highlighted by key advocacy wins on the global health and development stage with UICC and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Alliance detailed in global commitments in the form of resolutions and global action plans to cancer and NCDs, the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and most recently the commitment to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.

With a BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Liverpool University, following post-doctoral research in Germany, Julie entered the health arena and subsequently field of oncology through leading clinical trials work across phases I-IV, first at a small clinical research organisation and then AstraZeneca one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers - with a focus on breast and gynaecologic cancers while, nurturing an ongoing interest in cancer prevention. Julie now works internationally with a shift to public health policy and global advocacy working alongside United Nations agencies and government bodies.
