Where did our favourite plants come from?
Event Information
About this Event
Please join this talk as this provides a trip through history to see when and from where some of ‘English’ garden plants came from and when they first arrived in our gardens. It looks at the origins of some of our favourite, quintessentially ‘English’ garden plants.
This considers:
Some early but mainly useful introductions from the Romans
Medicinal and decorative plants brought back from the Crusades
Elizabethan explorers who accidentally introduced us to potatoes and tobacco
The English gardener responsible for the fashionable Tulip ‘Semper Augustus’
Introductions to our gardens from China and Japan by Victorian plant hunters
The talk will be 45 minutes approximately with time for a short question and answer session.
* Please note this is a repeat of one of the talks from the Winter School
