Time in nature reduces stress and boosts mood, but how?
Beyond sensory experiences like birdsong or greenery, Daniel Zuchowski proposes grounding (i.e. direct contact with the Earth’s surface, like walking barefoot on grass) as a key factor. Historically universal but diminished by modern urban life and rubber-soled shoes, grounding stabilises the body’s electrical charge, supplying electrons that reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and ease pain. Research suggests it balances nervous system function, enhancing overall well-being.
This workshop will cover some theory and discuss Daniel’s ongoing research, conducted at the University of Central Lancashire, comparing grounding's effects on heart rate variability (HRV). Attendees will also have the opportunity to measure their own HRV using a wearable device during grounded and ungrounded conditions, gaining personalised insights into this wellness practice.
