Where is the 'lithium valley’? Extractivist discourses in three territories

There isn’t one Lithium Valley. At least three different locations have been labelled ‘lithium valleys’ as a way to evoke the technological development of the silicon valley, whilst proposing to transform territories to extract a single mineral.

In 2023, the Jequitinhonha Valley in Brazil was branded ‘The Lithium Valley’ by government and mining companies at a Nasdaq bell-ringing initiative.The Bikita region in Zimbabwe appears in media headlines as ‘the world’s next lithium valley’. The lithium valley in California is a project to extract ‘the greenest lithium in the world’ from geothermal waters in the region of Salton Sea.

This webinar will gather Alejandro Artiga-Purcell (San José State University, USA), Mikhail Aruberito (Shine Collab, Zimbabwe) and Aline Weber Sulzbacher (Federal University of the Valleys and the Semiarid Region- UFVJM, Brazil), with moderation by Fabiana Leme (LIQUIT) to discuss the narrative strategies that promote the establishment of so-called Lithium Valleys around the world and their implications.

We will hear critical perspectives on the green and just transition discourses of extractivist projects that threaten to disrupt the possibilities of other socio-ecological futures. But what does it mean to brand a whole region after one metal? What is being suppressed with that discourse? Join us for a lively discussion on the controversial 'lithium valley' concept and its impact on various regions around the world.

Onde fica o “vale do lítio”? Discursos extrativistas em três territórios.

Não existe um único Vale do Lítio. Pelo menos três locais diferentes foram rotulados como “vales do lítio” como forma de evocar o desenvolvimento tecnológico do Vale do Silício, ao mesmo tempo que se propõe a transformação de territórios para extrair um único mineral.

Em 2023, o Vale do Jequitinhonha, no Brasil, foi batizado de “Vale do Lítio” pelo governo e por empresas de mineração em uma iniciativa da Nasdaq. A região de Bikita, no Zimbábue, aparece nas manchetes da mídia como “o próximo vale do lítio do mundo”. O vale do lítio na Califórnia é um projeto para extrair “o lítio mais verde do mundo” das águas geotérmicas da região do Salton Sea.

Este webinar reunirá Alejandro Artiga-Purcell (Universidade Estadual de San José, EUA), Mikhail Aruberito (Shine Collab, Zimbábue) e Aline Weber Sulzbacher (Universidade Federal dos Vales e da Região Semiárida - UFVJM, Brasil), com moderação de Fabiana Leme (LIQUIT), para discutir as estratégias narrativas que promovem o estabelecimento dos chamados Vales do Lítio ao redor do mundo e suas implicações. 

Ouviremos perspectivas críticas sobre os discursos de transição verde e justa de projetos extrativistas que ameaçam perturbar as possibilidades de outros futuros socioecológicos. Mas o que significa rotular toda uma região com o nome de um metal? O que está sendo suprimido com esse discurso?
