About this Event

Where is the wild?

Join visual artists Melanie Rose and Judith Tucker for a full day of creative responses to the landscape of Castle Howard!

The day will start with a short walk through the grounds, after which you will be able to experiment with a wide variety of media and approaches, from observational drawing to working with objects and maps. You will have privileged access to material from archives, including historical maps. Through noticing, listening, and paying close attention to the “landscape” that you will walk through, the workshop will explore ideas of the rural, the wild, the natural, the unnatural, domestic, farming-related and designed landscapes, past, present and even future.

Melanie Rose and Judith Tucker are both artists whose work considers landscape, social history, and personal memory. Both have exhibited extensively: Judith Tucker has been twice shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting prize and for the inaugural Westmorland Landscape Prize in 2019. Melanie Rose was a finalist in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition in 2019.

The workshops are free, and you can sign up for either Saturday 21st or Saturday 28th March. Please note that this booking page is for the workshop on Saturday 21st March.

The workshops run from 10am to 3.30 pm and include refreshments and lunch, plus free entry to the house after the workshops, along with a small bursary of £10 per person to help with travel costs.

There will be an optional walk around the grounds of Castle Howard lasting approximately 20 minutes, so please wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather on the day.

The route around the house and grounds is fairly accessible, with level access and ramps and mostly paved, gravel paths and maintained lawns outside the house. The upper parts of the house are accessible by stairlift, for anyone wishing to take a tour of the house at the end of the day.

Please fill out the form below in order to book your place. Please make sure you fill in the relevant boxes to notify us of any specific allergies, dietary requirements, or access requirements. If you would like further information, or have any queries about the workshops, please contact us at landlines@leeds.ac.uk.

If you have signed up to the workshop and can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket and let us know via email (landlines@leeds.ac.uk), as there will be a waiting list for the event.

We hope to see you there!
