How many voices do you have inside your head? Which one shouts the loudest? Which one do you listen to? In this session we’ll take a look at three ‘ego states’ which exist within all of us and which I will refer to as ‘voices.’ We demonstrate which of these voices we are listening to through how we think, feel and behave. The psychological terminology for this study is ‘transactional analysis’. In fact, there are lots of fancy intellectual words around this subject that are difficult to understand but in this session we won’t be using them! I am not a psychologist and am quite a simple person so I’ll be using simple language to help negotiate our way to understanding the perspective of each of the three voices.
Having experienced poor mental health throughout my life this is my take on some well-respected psychology with a decent track record of making people feel a bit better. If you’re anything like me you will hopefully identify with all three voices, and will then be able to reflect on which situations in your own life lead to which voice becoming the most dominant. It’s fascinating stuff! With an understanding of each voice and having considered when they affect our thinking, it’s possible to notice when we slip into each voice and gain an understanding of how things might be different, and hopefully better, if we are able to choose the right voice to listen to in the right situation.
