The Retreat

The World/Environment that surrounds us is a vast, living, interconnected play of conditions: a living being. Animistic pagan traditions have long honoured and celebrated this living cosmos and our place within it. Our weekend will be a joyful and gentle immersion in nature and our embodied presence in a community of embodied presences. Under these conditions we will entertain the possibility of conversation with the living Earth, aiming to transform an intellectual understanding of interconnection into a vital experience. Ratnadeva has been exploring the common ground between Paganism and the Dharma for some years and invites you to join in this endeavour, through shared practice, reflection and ritual.

Ratnadeva Says:

'There is a conference of beings perpetually in session. We can join in if the conditions are right. The Buddha teaches us how to put the conditions in place. He sits at the nexus between worlds, waiting for us to attend. We can’t force it. When we join in the conversation it is because we are invited. And the invitation is a grace, a blessing from the cosmos. We need to be open, receptive, humble, patient, submissive. This is what the Buddha teaches. We need to listen out for the utterance of earth, our bodies the antennae. The Earth can whisper us into new being, if only we can hear. The invitation comes through the body, whose language is the language of earth. It is not the language of striving, but of presence. Attentive, sometimes silent presence. Sometimes the silence is broken and words arc across the gap, a crackling illumination, and a current of love pulses through us. Then we know we are truely alive. And the world will be a better place for our aliveness.'
