The evolution of a Kentish Coastal Landscape. This is a great opportunity to take a step back in time as we go back to explore the evidence of life in the oceans from over 80 million years ago, and the way our coastline reveals the past from what we see today.
This walk & talk is led by geology expert Richard Hubbard and explores the geology, coastal erosion, history and secrets of the Kingsgate coastline in Broadstairs, Kent.
Thanet's chalk cliffs and chalk reef contain hidden secrets and evidence of the changes in the world over millions of years. The chalk cliffs and reef are part of the Thanet Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest and the other nature designations that form the 'North East Kent Marine Protected Area'. However, this coastline also has some great stories from the more recent locals and its smuggling past!
This walk iand talk s based on Richard's book and will involve a walk along the beach taking a closer look at the chalk coastline. These walks are suitable for adults (& over 11 years of age) and will last around 2 hours.
You will require sturdy footwear (walking shoes or boots) for walking on the beach and rocky chalk shore (MEDIUM uneven terrain for walking). Please wear clothing to suit the coastal weather condition on the day (raincoat/windproof - for rain/wind; layers to keep warm, if it is cold; or suntan lotion/hat/cover up to avoid sunburn, if sunny!) Please stay safe and be aware & abide by the Beaches and Coast PSPO and codes of conduct.
Online bookings only - as numbers will be limited - with a suggested donation of £5 to £10pp.
PLEASE NOTE:
- You need to 'select a walk date' first (on this form).
- Each booking is for ONE PERSON ONLY
