Join us this summer for Picnic in the Park at Whitehorse Road Community Garden, a jam packed day focused on conservation and community. After bad weather in July, we re-scheduled this event to August!
BrightenUp London supports the smaller, lesser known green spaces too, and it is these sites that need volunteer support more than any other. We invite volunteers to support Whitehorse Road Recreation Ground in becoming the community garden its locals deserve.
Picnic in the park will include a Community Litter Pick, a garden session (hoeing and pruning), activities for young people and families, and of course, a picnic!
Whether you are local to Croydon, or would simply like to support BrightenUp London, come along with your friends and families (and a picnic contribution!).
About Whitehorse Road
Whitehorse Road Recreation Ground was acquired by Croydon Council in 1891 as a public space for families and community groups to gather, hold events, and play games. Since this time, it has seen some decay due to a lack of funding. By 2016, the local Friends of the Park group began their initiative to gradually turn the very much neglected garden around. The aim of the group is to create and develop a Community Garden which is attractive to both people and wildlife.
Whitehorse Community Garden also prides itself on its artistic roots, boasting numerous horse sculptures, and planning the creation of murals and colourful signage educating the public about the environment.
Please wear suitable clothing and shoes for outdoor activities, and bring layers in case of rain. (The activity will go ahead in light rain). Tools and gloves will be provided.
