Event description

Description

In the year since the EU referendum hate crimes in the UK have doubled, confirming the anecdotal evidence that some 'Leave' voters believed their vote meant that people of colour should 'Leave' the UK.

But how big is the percentage of racists? Are they just emboldened by the result, but fighting the tide of history? To what extent is class, constrained public services and austerity the real driver behind voter anger? What role do the media have in stoking fears about immigration? And how key is Islamophobia - with 'Islam isn't a race' being used to justify attacks on Muslims from both left and right.

Our Byline panel comprises five women who have personal and professional experience of racism and how to combat it

Rushanara Ali - MP for Bethnal Green and Bow

Salena Godden - poet and author

Bonnie Greer - playwright and columnist

Afsana Lachaux - chair

Kam Sandhu - editor/founder of Real Media UK

Doors open 6.30. Interview begins at 7.00 pm followed by Q and A

8.30 Drinks and music Downstairs at the NUJ
