Join us with partners the Chiltern Society on a guided walk through two of the Chilterns finest nature reserves.
About this event
Whiteleaf Hill & Cross Nature Reserve is located above the historic market town of Princes Risborough and provides fantastic panoramic views of the Chilterns escarpment, across the Vale of Aylesbury and on to the Wessex Downs in the distance. Situated adjacent is Brush Hill Nature Reserve.
During this guided walk you will be introduced to a diverse range of habitats and will see how they all support an array of flora and fauna throughout the year, largely thanks to the chalk grassland underneath, a relic from earlier eras when broad swathes of traditional sheep grazed downlands of the thin chalky soils of the Chilterns scarp slope.
Specialist plants and insects, like the chalk hill blue and marbled white butterflies, clustered bellflower and horseshoe vetch thrive on the sun baked slopes. Whiteleaf Hill is also well known for the 100m high chalk hill figure – The Whiteleaf Cross – on its northern slope and is home to several other interesting archaeological features, including a Neolithic barrow and WW1 practice trenches.
The walk will keep to public footpaths, including a part of the Ridgeway National Trail, reputed to be Britain’s very oldest road.
