OBJECTIVES

The seminar aims to provide an introduction to the main benefits available and how these are calculated. The system of appeals against decisions of the DWP and local authority in relation to benefits is a complicated one. This seminar will demystify the process for practitioners and advisers by covering the point of challenging a decision through the first-tier and upper tribunal process right up to the Court of Session review.

PARTICIPANTS

This seminar will be of interest to solicitors, trainees and service providers working within the social welfare sector.

SPEAKER

Lee Oliver, Rights Advice Scotland. Lee Oliver has been a Welfare Rights Officer for more than 25 years working, mainly in Scotland but with couple of enjoyable years in England, within Local Authority Welfare Rights teams. His day job is currently split about 50/50 between delivering training on different aspects of Social Security and representing people at Appeals.

As a member of the board of Rights Advice Scotland he actively works to support colleagues across the country in their practice, finding that supporting colleagues is not only good fun but greatly enhances his own practice.
