Overview

A symposium of talks and workshops on the Council of Nicaea on its 1700th anniversary

The year 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, convened in Nicaea in 325 AD. This landmark event shaped the course of Christian history, establishing foundational doctrines, affirming the divinity of Christ, and uniting the Church in a common confession of faith. The Nicene Creed, which emerged from this gathering, remains a cornerstone of Christian belief across the centuries and traditions.

This symposium seeks to reflect on the enduring significance of the Council of Nicaea. We will explore its historical context in the early Church, the theological debates that led to its convening, and the long-reaching consequences for Christian theology, liturgy, and ecclesial life. Attention will also be given to the figures who played pivotal roles—such as St. Athanasius, and Arius—and to the broader philosophical and cultural currents that influenced the aryian heresy.
