Review:

While Artificial Intelligence is often considered to belong in the realm of sci-fi, or at least the future, this is quite simply a misconception. Almost by stealth, A.I. has become a mainstay of modern civilization - everything from search engines to the stock market is reliant on A.I. technology, and its reach grows further at a remarkable - and perhaps concerning - rate. WHO MADE YOU? is a holistic study of this spread. Iiris Härmä explores A.I. in all its forms, from a robot programmed to help the aged to exercise; to sex bots designed to be selfish lovers (so as to better reflect real humans); to machines capable of creating unique, original human faces.

Between these case studies, the documentary considers the ethical implications of the technology, and the necessary safeguards that must be put in place. One segment delves into the world of self-identified ‘cyborgs’, or trans-humanists, who augment their bodies with technology. Are these people ahead of the curve, or rather opening a can of worms of privacy concerns? Or could it be both? Härmä does not judge her subjects, nor engage in alarmist technophobia, but rather offers a variety of perspectives. Vigilance, perhaps, is her lasting message. / Review by Milo Garner
