About this event

Join us at Broome Park Farms for a day of whole farm planning learning sessions as part of the Soil Association's Agroecology at Scale Programme. This free event includes a light lunch and refreshments.

This event has been kindly supported and co-funded by The Farmer Network Ltd. The Farmer Network Ltd is an independent, non-profit, farmer-led organisation that provides help and support to farmers in Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales, and Northumberland, regardless of the challenges or opportunities they face.

What should you expect from the event?

Attendees will join small groups to rotate around four 30 minute sessions that cover topics across whole farm planning, hosted by:

  • Joel Williams, Integrated Soils: Interpreting soil sample results and relating to farm practice

Joel is an independent plant and soil health educator providing lectures, workshops and consultation on soil management, plant nutrition and integrated approaches of sustainable food production. Joel has extensive practical experience in Australia, UK and Canada integrating soil and plant analyses as a joined-up strategy for managing production.

  • Moredun institute - Faecal egg counting and sustainable parasite management

Moredun is a registered charity, with over 10,000 UK members from the farming, veterinary and associated industries. Moredun works to support animal health and welfare by improving the understanding, treatment, and prevention of diseases through research and educational initiatives. The research outputs, knowledge and expertise generated at Moredun are disseminated as widely as possible to bring maximum benefits to the economy and society at large.

  • Forestry Commission - Planning and funding for trees on farm

The Forestry Commission is a non-ministerial government department responsible for the management of publicly owned forests and the regulation of both public and private forestry in England.

  • Paul Alison, Organic farmer & PhD at Newcastle University: Farmer case study - applying research on farm

Paul Allison is an organic farmer in Weardale, Co. Durham (120 suckler cows and 350 ewes on 145 ha of pastureland), but he works more off the farm than he does on it. He is doing PhD research in plant physiological agroecology and does commercial investigation work on a contract basis. He has a first degree in plant science and a masters in ruminant nutrition. He contributes to the farming / science podcast; “Cows and effect”.

Alongside these informative sessions, there will be opportunity to network with local farmers.
