Event description

Description

Birmingham Wholesale Market could rightly be said to be the birthplace of the city. It's now being closed to make way for the largest regeneration project in the city since the Bullring - bringing huge changes to Brum, changing the city forever. There have been markets on the site since the 11th century, it's the site of the original manor house and has huge historical significance, not least since its people have been feeding the rest of us for centuries. The market has a unique culture all of it's own, which is unlikely to survive the move to its new home in Witton.

Join us for a once in a lifetime chance to celebrate the closure of our historic Wholesale Markets and to herald some of the biggest changes to our city for decades. Through performance, choreography, music, photography, sculpture and film, we will take you on a 900-year journey through the lives of the birthplace of the city. Join us for a last chance trip through the beating heart of Brum's history and pay homage with us to the men and women who have fed us all from this unique place, hidden before our very eyes.

Featuring artwork by Dan Burwood, Glenn Anderson, Colourburst, Prime Objective, Georgia Chapman, Nita Newman, Friction Arts and many more, Everything Must Go promises to be an event that will remain in your memory long after Everything Has Gone.

Friction have been making artworks and projects at the market since 2001, and since 2015 have been intensively recording, photographing and filming this special place, and working with the city archives and Birmingham Museums Trust to ensure it's people and culture are remembered by future generations of Brummies.
