Description

Welcome to Wider Horizons

A new journey has just begun.

Wider Horizons is a Transformational Gathering in Nature for Young Adults to explore the great mysteries of existence.

Friday 13th Sept - Sunday 15th Sept 2019

Wasing Park

For thousands of years communities throughout the world have held rituals to support young people through their transition to adulthood, but weve largely lost this in our modern western culture. Wider Horizons has been intentionally created to provide a place where you can explore spirituality, science and consciousness and develop a deeper connection with nature.

The average 18-23 year-old now spends three-four hours a day on social media and another three hours a day on other screen-based work. This initiative will enable you to re-connect with your body, with others and with nature. At the same time you will discover a new appreciation of the richness of the inner and outer world.

Wider Horizons is for young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 years old. It integrates five main aspects: workshops, a vision quest, a rite of passage ritual, participation and celebrating.

The workshops are designed to support you in your development. The contributors include professors, doctors, lecturers, Taoist sages, shamen, artists as well as other practitioners from a variety of healing disciplines. You are able to choose from a diverse workshop programme that includes lucid dreaming, expressive dance, individual and group healing, shared story-writing, martial arts and sacred singing. As well as learning new skills, you will have opportunities to explore questions about who we are and the mysteries of consciousness and our relationship with the physical world. Alternative views of the nature of mind and the universe will be presented for you to experience.

The vision quest combines an inward journey into yourself and an outward journey into nature. It involves finding a space in nature to meditate and receive a vision of what to let go of and what to bring into your life to liberate and empower you in your progress into adulthood.

The rite of passage ritual is being led by MSc Students on the Alef Trust Transpersonal Psychology course (https://www.aleftrust.org/). It will be a sensory journey that will take place in the woods, culminating in a celebration around the fire.

Attending Wider Horizons entitles you to receive a year's free membership with the Scientific and Medical Network (https://explore.scimednet.org/), who are also kindly sponsoring this event.

Experience has shown that a valuable sense of belonging comes from participation at gatherings in nature, involving the sharing of one's energy. The gathering is about moving from the mindset of the child - where one is looked after by the tribe, to the adult mindset - where you now look after the tribe so there will be opportunities to engage in service, such as cooking and site maintenance, but only if and when you want to - no pressure, no obligation.

We will be creating systems to sustain the relationships, connections and networks formed at Wider Horizons, involving an exciting yearly programme including regular meet-ups and internet chat rooms. Our hope is for Wider Horizons participants to stay together as a group, forming a nucleus which can not only support itself but also offer others alternative views.

Dr Oliver Robinson PhD, Senior Lecturer, University of Greenwich
KEEPING OPEN TO THE GREAT MYSTERY; WHY MUCH LIES BEYOND THE PROVINCE OF SCIENCE
Be prepared to go on a journey into the evidence for a Great Mystery that lies beyond the physical world and beyond our waking reality. The Dakota tribe have a lovely word for this Great Mystery – “Wakan Tanka. We will explore some of the evidence for it, including the mystery of consciousness, the mystery of where natural laws and physical constants come from, the mathematical patterns in nature that have no scientific or rational explanation, and the mystical and visionary experiences that are becoming more common in the general population. Links will be drawn to the era of the enlightenment as a rite of passage for mankind, who collectively changed from children to adults at that time, and developed "the courage to use their own understanding. Participants will engage in thought experiments about the nature of consciousness, share some meditation practices, explore some mathematical mysteries through running hand calculations, and share their own experiences of non-normal states of consciousness.

Charlie Morley, Hay House author and Buddhist lucid dreaming teacher
LEARN HOW TO LUCID DREAM
By using the best of both Tibetan Buddhist and Western dream-work techniques, Charlies workshops offer a uniquely holistic approach to lucid dreaming and conscious sleeping with the aims of wider holistic benefits; psychological growth and self-discovery.

Professor Marilyn Monk, University College London
SELF-MASTERY
A workshop exploring how through self-mastery, you can govern your evolution using your imagination and constructive conscious control of The Self. You will start by observing that you are just one of hundreds of possible versions of yourself that you could have been, and still could be. Conditioning and our way of being in the world results from the epigenetic programming of our genes in response to our environment - in the womb, in early childhood, throughout life, our life view and choice of lifestyle, the friends and activities we choose, and our role in service to a higher order structure. You will learn about how change happens; turning points are often associated with a significant change in circumstances such as leaving home to start a new independent life, or attending a personal development retreat. You will explore questions like who am I, what determined who I am, who do I want to be, do I want to change, do I need to change (to re-invent myself in this new environment), what are the barriers to change, is it even possible to change and what are the determinants of self-mastery? You will learn that through the power of imagination you can change yourself. Marilyn will speak from her own experience in life exploring three realms of knowing and being - the scientist (objective truth), the poet (subjective truth), and the mystic (transcendental truth). She will share some of her experiences as a scientist both from her research and from the Alexander Technique, from her activities as a poet and artist and follower of Assagioli in Psychosynthesis, and her experience of becoming a mystic in an ashram in India.

Geoff Greentree, Sweat Lodge Facilitator, trained in California and Minnesota, USA and Chiapas, Mexico.
SWEAT LODGE
A Sweat Lodge is a purification and integration ceremony both for the individual and the group. It is based on Native American ritual in modern times, but practised for millennia in many cultural traditions. Geoffs approach integrates Druidic and Celtic traditions of our land, honouring the elements and the directions. The Sweat Lodge, as a transitional tool is ideal for young people starting out in life; connecting both to your sense of purpose and the feeling of achievement of going through an ordeal together, the basis of all ritual through the ages. It provides the lost connection with ceremony that is so important, providing an authentic experience of community on the land in the current inauthentic and often overwhelming environment. The Sweat Lodge will remind you that you can mutually support others and be supported through challenge, and that it can be fun to do so.

Rina Golan, Meditation and Yoga Teacher
THE PURUSHARTHA
The Purushartha is an ancient blueprint for living well based on Yoga. As well as leading Hatha Yoga practice, Rina Golan will explain how to live with passion and in service (Dharma), create material abundance and physical health (Artha), nurture emotional wellbeing (Kharma) and operate with mindful awareness (Moksha).

Dr Jessica Bockler PhD, is Founding Director of the ALEF Trust, a global learning provider which offers education programmes in consciousness studies, spirituality and transpersonal psychology and will offer the following three workshops:

AWAKENING THE TANDEN
Introduction to kata (movement sequences with wooden staff & sword) from the Japanese martial art Laido. The kata are designed to strengthen awareness of, and ability to relate from, our Tanden the psychospiritual seat of our life energy.

WATCHWORD TECHNIQUE
In this workshop we explore the Watchword Technique (Daniels, 1991), a Jungian system of self-study which uses a game of word association in the investigation of the structure and dynamics of the psyche. Discover your Watchword Matrix a unique map of your mind!

Dr. Amit Ranjan Biswas, Senior Consultant child/adolescent neuro-psychiatrist, ex-Hon Senior lecturer
SCREEN ALCHEMY; A CALL TO ADVENTURE: NAVIGATING LIFE TRANSITIONS USING THE POWER OF MOVIES!
In this workshop, through mindful film watching, discussions, writing and reflections, we will review the process of transitions and deepen our understanding of the art and science of personal mastery, flourishing and radical transformation of self. Using the lens of contemplative wisdom, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, medicine and spirituality, this interactive and highly experiential workshop will enable you to learn to find balance and act courageously in your personal calling.

Erika Tourell has been teaching yoga, working as a healer and facilitating healing workshops and retreats over the last two decades in the UK and worldwide. She is trained in many different healing modalities including physical therapies, yoga and meditation.
CULTIVATING LOVING KINDNESS
Why practice Loving Kindness (Metta) meditation and mindfulness? To gain clarity, become fully aware, end suffering, love ones self and all beings and open the heart to peace and compassion. The practice of Metta meditation is a beautiful support for our lives because it helps us to foster self-acceptance and kindness towards ourselves and others. One recites specific words and phrases evoking a boundless warm-hearted feeling. The strength of this feeling is not limited to or by family, religion or social class. We begin with our self and gradually extend the wish for well-being happiness to all beings. In this two-hour workshop there will be guided meditations and simple yoga including some (optional) partner work to practice safe, non-verbal communication, at times using touch to help promote relaxation and feelings of wellbeing in a supportive environment.

YOGA NIDRA
The Queen of all relaxation techniques; Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest forms of relaxation, while still maintaining full consciousness. It is a state of awareness in which the body can rest deeply and profoundly, whilst the mind is between wakefulness and deep rest. The practice meets the intuitive needs of the person who practices it Improving sleep, enhancing creativity, bringing nourishment, insight and healing. After taking time to get as comfortable as possible in a lying down position, youll be guided through a relaxation practice, expanding your awareness, bringing you back home to your deeper self to feel rested, restored and in your own power afterwards. No previous experienced needed.

SUFI DANCE MEDITATION
Concentration is the beginning of meditation. Sufis use many methods of concentration to cultivate the heart and mind. The Sufis have always had music as part of meditation. Music is perhaps one of the greatest mysteries in the world. The whole manifested reality is made of vibrations and the vibrations of music can free the soul and release all heaviness that can keep it bound. Music touches the soul immediately and is food for the soul. Music is said to be the quickest and most direct way of freeing the consciousness. When one combines sound with Spiritual Dance the effects can be amplified greatly. In this Sufi Dance Meditation we cultivate awareness both in the movement and within the sound. The personal atmosphere and the atmosphere of group are enhanced and developed through these practices. For many people attempting to still the mind may be an impossible task. Transcending the ego with its untamed thought processes and uncontrolled emotional states often needs what could be called the back-door method. By learning to give ones full attention to a practice that one enjoys, that is uplifting, this can have the effect of bypassing the thinking mind. In so doing this takes one into deeper levels of awareness with less effort and often more effectively. Meditation is ultimately a way of experiencing all of life, inner and outer, in the fullness of each present moment. The dance takes the form of very simple repetitive steps for thirty minutes and ends with lying down relaxation. It is a profound and beautiful meditation. NB This dance does not involve whirling or spinning.

YOGA FOR EVERY BODY
Join Erika for some self-care and nourishment. This class will offer you an opportunity to dive deep into your body using mindful movement and breath to open up the energy pathways to revitalise yourself, release accumulated stress and tension and help quieten the mind. You will be encouraged to work intuitively, to rest when you feel, and to do as much or as little of the yoga as you can. We will be working towards creating a positive attitude towards the whole self; body, mind. heart and spirit, developing deep self-acceptance and cultivating patience and compassion. As we move towards embracing our whole selves as we are, we begin to be able to accept life, and indeed the whole world and its' people, as it is. From this acceptance we are more able to drop into a more relaxed and joyful state of being. We are all a work in progress. One step, one breath at a time.

Rachel May, Doula for birth and death. She supports humans through times of transition and is deeply charged by the Mystery of Life.
STORY BASED EXPLORATION OF LIFE
How stories shape our lives and how we can be the author of our life

Ben Gross MBACP(Accred) MSc MBSR PGCE
Events organiser, Musician, Psychotherapist and Meditation teacher
SACRED SINGING CIRCLE
When asked what we could do to halt the self-destructive course we are on as a whole human society, a group of international Wisdom Keepers, Elders and Shamans advised us to connect with spirit and live a spiritual life. There is no dichotomy between meditation and contemplation and action/activism. The two are one. In sacred singing we meditate and send prayers to people and situations which need healing. The power of group intention to heal is starting to be recognised now through scientific research. This workshop is an opportunity to experience this by singing sacred songs from around the world. It is an opportunity to come together as one to celebrate this beautiful, holy life that were all in, together. Please bring instruments and an open heart.

Cleo Broda, MFA Master of Fine Arts, PGCert Learning and Teaching in Art and Design, Lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts, Accredited Coach with RD1st Relational Dynamic Coaching
MAP WORKSHOP
An art workshop where participants will use natural materials to make individual maps charting significant moments in their lives. The maps will represent important landmarks, layers of changes, routes taken or left aside. We will use natural objects gathered from the woods along with drawing materials. The workshop will culminate in making a large group map which makes connections between the individual maps, finding links and charting common terrain.

Zoe Cobb, Dancer/Aerialist/Choreographer and Performance Director
THE FLOCKING - A self-organising game, based on migrating animals, that creates complicity within self and group.
As the title suggests, The Flocking is inspired by migrating animals. It is a group movement practice that uses mimicry as our primary source of learning. Igniting our instincts of play and creativity it creates group complicity, flow and mindfulness. It is a model for progressive self-organising leadership as well as a development and well-being tool. It connects, surfaces, expresses and resolves through non-verbal communication.

Mark Mabon, Systemic Coach and Constellations Facilitator
MUSES AND URGES
A workshop exploring how cultures have used trance, dance and other techniques to alter our state of consciousness and access higher states, for pleasure, illumination, insight and transformation. When all these things can also be used to avoid emotional pain, how do we avoid falling into addictive patterns? In this workshop we will use some unique mystery techniques so participants can explore this territory for themselves and learn new ways to navigate our wild nature, instinctive urges and creative drives.

MSc students, The ALEF Trust for Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology
RITES OF PASSAGE
A workshop exploring how the wisdom of ancient cultures can inform us in developing and reigniting initiation rituals.

Danny Gross, Climate Campaigner at Friends of the Earth
CLIMATE CHANGE - WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?
This workshop explores how all of us can play a role in addressing the greatest threat facing our planet. We will explore how to tackle climate change in our daily lives, including how we eat, travel, save money and fight for political change.

Jud Relf, PGCE BA
JUST FOR FUN
We will be romping quickly through a wide variety of games, playing as individuals, pairs, teams and whole group; sometimes competitive, sometimes cooperative; sometimes we'll be circling in quiet concentration and tender sensitivity, and sometimes running around raucously. The games are drawn from various arenas, from the school playground to theatre to team building. You might reawaken our inner child, or you might just have a good laugh; either way the emphasis is always on letting go of seriousness and having fun for the sake of fun, and you are guaranteed to leave feeling more open and connected, and energised for whatever's next for you.

Jen McCarty Fully awakened spiritual teacher and leading luminary in the ascension and twin flame community.
ANCESTRAL TRAUMA CLEARING WORKSHOP
Work with seven generations behind you and seven generations in front of you to clear your ancestral lineages core traumas.

Zak Avery, Event Organiser, Festival Curator, Conscious Being
CHANNELING PRANA AND CONTROLLING THE MIIND
The Primary navigator of our ship is our thoughts, and one of the most valuable gifts we can acquire is the ability to channel our thoughts with positive intention, and observe and understand how the brain works, and how to trick it into remaining positive regardless of the situational outcome. A combination of perception, but also some simple, easy to implement activities in our day to day routine can ensure life flows seamlessly. From morning pages to journalling to basic breathwork, rituals around the planetary motions and open heartfelt connection to our inner child, there are surefire ways to ensure you grasp the human brain and spirit, and ensure you continue in life on a profound positive trajectory.

"Every day, after you wake up and before you do anything else, write three pages, longhand. Start writing and dont stop until you get to the end of page three. Dont slow down, dont self-edit, and dont think about how bad or even good this writing might be. Its not for anyones eyes but your own, and the only requirement is that you be as honest and unfiltered and unfettered and free as you can, and, most importantly, keep the pen moving. Get out of the way. Go." Julia Cameron, in her book The Artists Way

Louis Weinstock, Transpersonal Psychotherapist
JOURNEYS OF CHANGE
This experiential workshop will explore, What I want to let go of and what to bring with me as I become an adult? Were my childhood needs met? How Im changing. Louis will offer therapeutic techniques to access the wisdom of your unconscious mind, accept your past and dream in potential futures.

James Mermagen, Head of Chaucer Barn Mystery School
DRUIDIC MAGIC, SPELLS AND RUNES
Wand-making workshop.

David King, Student of Psychiatry
RITES OF PASSAGE
A Talk-workshop describing how parents and their children can better understand each other through activities in our society which form rites of passage - especially changes which are difficult or emotionally painful. How millennia-old ritual structures can be used to help all members of the families get through difficult times. This will help you prepare for the challenges you will have to negotiate throughout your life by becoming aware of ritual processes you are going through. Dave King will present a case for why parents need to be actively engaged in the emotional lives and activities of their children, and how you can maintain your access to this support as you transition into adulthood.

Joe Cathers and his team of woodland cooks will provide delicious breakfasts, lunches and suppers throughout the event included with your ticket. This will always include vegetarian options. There will be a focus on local harvesting.

Attending Wider Horizons entitles you to receive a year's free membership with the Scientific and Medical Network, who are also kindly sponsoring this event.

Looking forward to seeing you at Wider Horizons 2019!
